Tutela in dire need of a bakkie
Tutela has been serving the community for 35 years and they are pleading for assistance with a new bakkie.
THE ever-growing need to reach out to the underprivileged has left Tutela with no other option but to turn to the community for assistance in acquiring a bakkie.
Tutela, formerly known as Christelike Maatskaplike Raad (CMR), was founded on April 2, 1984, and has been serving the community for 35 years.
According to Karen van Heerden, office administrator, the bakkie they have is non-operational. They need the bakkie to collect donations and deliver food for the feeding schemes they run.
They are currently doing a feeding scheme for two primary schools in Thokoza and four daycare centres in Eden Park.
“Once a week, vegetables and fruit are bought and taken to the schools where it is prepared to provide nutritious meals for needy children. Our reach has grown, which means more vegetables and fruit is bought, which takes up more space,” said van Heerden.
“A bakkie in working order is vital for us to render these services,” she said.
“We are looking for someone to sponsor us with a new, bigger bakkie.
“The sponsor may brand it from top to bottom!
“We will be a proud mobile advertisement for your company,” said van Heerden.
Other services
Other services Tutela provides are family care, early childhood development and elderly care. Tutela also has a facility for homeless people to shower every day and the social workers will try to give counselling to the homeless people if they are willing to talk.
Tutela also offers counselling to people with drug and alcohol-related issues.
Tutela renders these services with the assistance of the Christian Independent Service, the Dutch Reformed churches, Department of Social Development, KFC Add Hope and Lotto.
Other ways to assist
Van Heerden reminded the community to keep an eye out for their collection tins. These tins are part of their #openhandopenheart (#oophandoophart) project.
“These funds will be used in support of several ongoing community projects at our office,” added van Heerden.
Every Friday, Tutela holds a jumble sale where people can buy books at give-away prices. Donations of books in good condition are always welcome to stock up for these jumble sales.

Bringing hope
In 2016 they changed their name to Tutela Gesinsorg/Family Care, Alberton. Contrary to popular belief. The word “Tutela” is a Latin term used for care, protection, support, shelter and refuge. All of this is incorporated in their slogan “Caring Brings Hope”.
Like any other NPO, Tutela relies on donations from the public. Tutela is a registered Article 18A company and can give individuals or companies an 18A certificate for donations made.
