Alberante residents fed up with continuous pipe bursts

Resident face a turmoil of pipe bursts in Alberante Extension One.

ALBERANTE Extension One residents in Japie Greyling and Danie Theron streets have been experiencing constant pipe bursts for the last four months.

In the last three months, Japie Greyling Street residents experienced six bursts. In the early hours of February 25 residents experienced another burst and they were left without water for almost the entire day.

According to Ward 36 councillor alderman Bruna Haipel, the pipe bursts have been happening for a very long time and she went all out to have the pipes replaced, but without luck.

Furthermore, Haipel told the RECORD the pipes are 40 years old and she has been trying to get the pipes replaced.

During 2018, Haipel, together with residents, signed a petition in October for the pipe to be replaced, but nothing has been done to rectify the situation since the petition was handed in.

“The petition was handed in during October to the City, but nothing has been done and it’s frustrating,” said Haipel.

An irritated resident in Japie Greyling Street, Willie du Preez, told the RECORD the City of Ekurhuleni is not doing enough because the pipe bursts continuously and all they do is just fix the burst, but never replace the whole pipe.

According to Haipel and du Preez, another factor that influences the regular burst is the fact that the soil in the Alberante area is clay.

“Last year we had six bursts in one month. This is really frustrating and we have been complaining about this issue for a long time,” said Euthene du Preez, also a resident.
