WARNING: Be vigilant of wheelie bin tender scam
The City of Ekurhuleni urges people to be careful of a bogus 260-litre wheelie bin tender scam.
CITY of Ekurhuleni is warning residents to be vigilant about the bogus 260-litre wheelie bin tender that is supplied by a service provider allegedly operating from Cape Town.
Unsuspecting and vulnerable service providers are asked to deposit before they are told the bins will be delivered on their behalf at 47 Van Buuren Road, the City of Ekurhuleni Communication and Brand Management Department.
In a release issued by Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM), divisional head of communication and media relations Nhlanhla Cebekhulu said: “The criminals send a possible service provider a letter of appointment bearing the City’s logo with the fraudulently generated order number.”
The criminals have succeeded in cheating money out of unaware and vulnerable people despite the City warning service providers about the scam. Service providers are urged to thoroughly scrutinise the tender documents since the scammers have perfected their scamming acts.
“Due to the high volume of victims recently scammed, the city emphasises that service providers must be vigilant, the City reiterates that the 260-litre wheelie bin tender is a scam,” added Celekhulu.
The City is fully committed to transparency on any information related to business and procurement. Such information is free and available to the public. Entrepreneurship is highly encouraged and supported by the City and any organisation or individuals that seek to exploit aspirant entrepreneurs will be exposed.
The culprits use fake emails similar to the City of Ekurhuleni emails. People are advised to be cautious when they receive an email encompassing the City.
