KINGSTONE SIZIBA: “Schools in the suburbs are doing well in terms of building a positive platform for children. I'm concerned with public schools because they are not doing enough.”
EDUCATION plays a major role in our society in developing learners. The RECORD went out to the streets to ask the following question: “Do you think the public school system still builds a positive platform for children?”
BEATRICE BADENHORST: “I do think that the public schools build the children positively but there are also children that have bad attitudes, that tend to think that they know more than their teachers. I also think that there are some teachers that teach for the sake of just doing their jobs.”
MANDI VISSER: “As a teacher, I have been out from the public schools for the last 15 years. With my experience as an Afrikaans teacher all my life, in Afrikaans schools, they stress sports participation which instils discipline. I wouldn’t want to comment much on public schools.”
LENDA SIBANYONI: “Yes, South Africa still offers one of the best education systems. The only problem is the foundation phase which I don’t think much focus has been put on. I don’t think the system is the problem but the children are.”
PATRICK MALATJIE: “The public school system treats learners fairly although it is without a doubt that there is a gap between private and public schools. Evidence of this is the fact that school fees are not the same.”
