EMM was requested to comment on February 19 and they replied on March 15 to the following questions:

1. What is the future plans for the Boulevard regarding upgrades?

“The City has completed Phase One of this project. The next phase will be undertaken when budget is provided for in terms of IDP priority list, which is prepared by ward councillors in consultation with affected community,” said Themba Gadebe, spokesperson for EMM.

2. What can be done to keep the Boulevard clean?

“The City has a contract for removal of litter and street sweeping in the Boulevard which includes the CBD. However, contractors who are responsible for the refurbishment, such as is the case with the pavement of the Boulevard, are responsible to remove any materials after they have finished working.”

3. Residents have complained that the uneven paving is a safety hazard. If people are injured badly after falling who can they contact to report and claim?

“The City has a Public Liability Claim process wherein the public is at liberty to make a claim against the City if they feel they have suffered damages. They can obtain a claim form at the Insurance Section which is situated on the Ground Floor of the Sanburn Building, 68 Woburn Avenue, Benoni or by calling 011 999 6550 or 011 999 6547. Their filled in form will be submitted to the City’s insurance underwriters for assessment.”
