WATCH: Street Store for the needy and homeless in Alberton

The needy and homeless will be invited to come and “shop” for clothing and shoes for free.

THE Street Store concept is a nationwide project driven by the vision to reach out to the less privileged and homeless people in our society.

It is a pop-up, free-shopping experience for those in need, focusing on providing winter essentials.

Alberton will see the very first Street Store in on May 18 at the Alberton Dam in Blou Tulp Road.

The needy and homeless will be invited to come and “shop” for clothing and shoes for free. It is well organised with a large number of volunteers assisting customers with their shopping.

Various organisations, such as churches, schools and companies, are all invited to take part and make this wonderful dream happen.

To make a real difference in the lives of those less privileged, your help will be highly appreciated.

Get involved

Doxa Deo Meyersdal is requesting the community to please consider your involvement in one or more of the following ways:

1. Donate clothing: Shirts, pants, shoes, jerseys, jackets and other warm items, for all ages. Please make sure all items are neat and without tears or holes. Doxa Deo wants to bless our people.

2. Accessories: They need lots of coat hangers and about 1 000 plastic shopping bags for our shoppers to take their shopping with them.

3. Provide a drop-off point: There is a need for a couple of easily accessible and recognisable venues throughout Alberton where people can drop off their donations. They will collect all donations at your request.

4. Storage: If you have something like a factory, a hall or a large space where donations can be kept and prepared for the Street Store, please consider making it available.

5. Volunteers: Volunteers will be needed on the day to welcome and assist shoppers. Every shopper will be assisted by a volunteer to make the experience as pleasurable as possible. Training will be given beforehand. Volunteers are also needed to sort and properly prepare all items for Street Store day. They also need people who can help with the washing and ironing of clothing where necessary.

6. Food bank: Doxa Deo would love to provide a meal to every shopper after his/her shopping. Sponsoring food or bottles of drinking water would be wonderful. They also need volunteers who can assist with at Food Bank at the venue.

The need in the community is enormous and by working together Doxa Deo believes they can make a huge impact in providing for those needs. They are excited to see the massive impact this venture will have in the lives of the beautiful people of Alberton.
