Meet Lions International District 410’s Citizen of the Year

Antoinette Venter was bestowed this honour - the highest recognition achievable within Lions Clubs International.

Antoinette Venter from Alberton was bestowed the honour as Lions Club International District 410 Citizen of the Year 2019.

Clubs nominate a non-Lion individual as Citizen of the Year for exceptional service in their community to enhance the quality of life for less fortunate people around them.

For this outstanding service, the winning candidate is given the Lions Clubs International Melvin Jones Award.

This is the highest recognition achievable within Lions Clubs International, and every Melvin Jones fellow is recorded for posterity at Lions Clubs International headquarters in Oakbrook, Illinois, on a special board set aside for this purpose.

This year the winner was an exceptional candidate, pensioner Antoinette Venter of Alberton, who, having successfully raised three children while working as a teacher at the School of Achievement, was widowed after 37 years when her husband Johnny died a few years ago.

Some of the organisations Antoinette assists, or is assisted by, are Alberton Lions, Earth Angels, Helpende Hand, Happy hearts, LOTS, Stepping Stones, AfriForum, Mama Rose feeding scheme, Sharing is Caring, Caring Association, Jabulani, Khaki Bos boys’ home, Karina and Northam elderly council flats, Alberton Retirement Village, local informal settlements, HELP Forum, RATA and Alberton SAP Victim Support.

She also distributes food, clothing and other household necessities to 23 families in need. People also visit Tannie A, as she is fondly known, when they are hungry and there is always a meal and a smile ready for them at her home.

Truly a worthy winner of the Lions Club International District 410 Citizen of the Year Award, and now also a Lions Club International Melvin Jones member.
