NG South Crest church stimulates minds of the elderly

The South Crest NG congregation hosted a game of chance for its seniors at the church on May 23.

THE Southcrest NG congregation hosted a game of chance for its seniors at the church on May 23.

Elderly members of the church gathered for their monthly meeting to play bingo. About 10 participants attended the session, which was filled with laughter and excitement.

The congregation regularly holds similar meetings where a variety of games are enjoyed, including Flink Dink (‘think quick’ – a general knowledge quiz) and Noot vir Noot, which tests their musical knowledge.

Health practitioners sometimes join the meetings and give advice on healthy living.

Rev Lorinda Schoonwinkel said, “This is a great way of bringing our seniors together. Through these games, they get to socialise. We host these meetings once a month and we are looking into having more members attending them. We encourage those who are interested to join us regardless of age or the churches they attend. The more the merrier.”

Excited Lukas Moolman waves his chocolate after winning his first round in Bingo.

Participant Edith van Wyk (89) emphasised the importance of these meetings.

“Coming here once in a while is always great because we get a chance to come together as elders and do what we love. We also give each other advice on challenges that we come across, particularly in matters that include our health,” she said.

Rev Lorinda Schoonwinkel calls out random numbers during the game.

Members who are mostly available during the day and are interested in meeting with seniors from the congregation are welcome to join. Contact Lorinda Schoonwinkel on 082 336 7397.
