Cyclists tackle 200km to raise funds for Stepping Stone Hospice

Cyclist must maintain an average speed of between 15 and 30kph, from start to finish and in between control points.

TWO Albertonians, 39-year old AW Claassens and his stepdad, 62-year old Willie Duvenhage, will attempt the AUDAX 200km cycle ride on June 23 in an effort to raise funds for Stepping Stone Hospice.

AW has on two previous occasions cycled in the annual 947 Cycle Challenge in aid of Stepping Stone Hospice, but says the AUDAX will be by far the toughest challenge he has ever taken on.

“But I’m a proud hospice supporter, I know they need the funds, that’s why I’m doing it.”

Willie agrees and said that though this will be a first fund-raising attempt from his side for Stepping Stone Hospice, he does consider himself a seasoned cyclist, having done the 947 Cycle Challenge and a few other races before.

The spirit of the AUDAX is that of a self-supporting ride on any form of human-powered vehicle, either alone or with others while maintaining an average speed of between 15 and 30kph, from start to finish and in between control points.

The route starts at the Circus Tent just off the R59 highway, back to Alberton, from there heading towards Walkerville, Heidelberg, the Vaal area and ending back at the Circus Tent.

AW predicts they should be able to finish in maximum of 10 hours.

“That is, of course, if everything goes according to plan,” he explains.
