Uncovered manholes across Alberton Civic Centre pose danger to residents
Ward 106 councillor alderman Bruna Haipel told the RECORD that residents must report the manhole issue to the City of Ekurhuleni so that it can be attended to.
THE Alberton area has recently been under a scourge of manhole lids theft. An uncovered manhole poses a serious danger to residents. Just across the Alberton Civic Centre there’s an uncovered manhole that residents have been complaining about.
Ward 106 councillor alderman Bruna Haipel told the RECORD that residents must report the manhole issue to the City of Ekurhuleni so that it can be attended to.
“The municipality can only learn about an open manhole if the matter gets reported and residents must make sure that they get a reference number when reporting the matter,” said Haipel.

Furthermore, Haipel told the RECORD that if the problem is not being attended to after three working days, residents must follow up. Residents can call the roads department on 086 054 3000.
On October 1, 2018, over 41 manholes were stolen in the Alberton area. Since July a total of 706 were whipped from sewer manholes in the whole of Ekurhuleni and 136 accounts for the Alberton area. In November last year, the executive mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Herman Mashaba, divulged that there are about 4 000 uncovered manholes throughout the City of Johannesburg (CoJ). About 104 deaths are scored by stolen manhole covers.

An open manhole poses a serious danger to pedestrians and motor vehicle drivers. An uncovered manhole can force motorists to swerve into oncoming traffic to avoid damaging their vehicles.
