WATCH: Non-working street lights in General Albertspark pose threat to the safety of residents

General Albertspark residents believe that the on-going flickering, and mostly not working street lights, are a threat to their safety.

FRUSTRATED residents in parts of General Albertspark believe that the on-going flickering, and mostly not working street lights, are a threat to their safety.

After lodging numerous complaints to the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM), their grievance has continued to go on for two months now.

The residents complained that most of the street lights are not working. If they do work, they are flickering making the area to be easily subjected to crime.

This, according to residents, is due to theft of copper cables inside these street light poles.

The residents told the RECORD that since this incident started, crime in the area has increased.

Affected residents Angelique Lourens and Engela Vermeulen.

Some of the residents complained that their electric fences had been tampered with and there were also attempts to break in at some of the houses in the area.

Quinton Kester, a resident at General Albertspark, said they were adversely affected by this.

“This has been an issue for a long time now. We have more street lights that do not work than the ones that do. It seems there’s a fuse that people keep stealing inside these poles, leaving us at a disadvantage,” he said.

Robert Klomp, also a resident in the area, said due to the street lights not working effectively he has had to change his sleeping routine.

“I fix people’s cars which I park at the back of my place, and with street lights not working it means I will have to safeguard these cars.

CHRISTINE VENTER: “Most of these poles are not even strapped perfectly. Safety hasn’t been prioritised at all because wires are sticking out. This problem frustrates us as residents.”

“Since this problem has been going on, I now take turns with my son, in terms of who sleeps and who patrols the yard. I would sleep today while he stays awake to patrol and the next day he’ll be the one to sleep,” he said.

The RECORD has contacted the EMM regarding the issue and their comment will be included on the updated story.
