Councillor gives feedback to Ward 38
Matters discussed included the flooding, Brackendowns Police Station and 8 Pangola Street.
RESIDENTS of Ward 38 participated in a public meeting at Bracken Park Community Hall on August 22.
The purpose of the meeting was for the Ward 38 Clr Malcolm Maifala to provide feedback to the residents of the ward.
The main point of discussion was the flooding that occurred at Renonkel Place over the Easter weekend and what has been done to prevent a similar disaster during the coming rain season.
According to Maifala, it was discovered that one of the major contributors to the disaster was the amount of rain which came down within a short period of time, as well as the ice from the hail which filled the drains.
These factors were too much for the storm water management of the property. Trenching around the area has been implemented to try and prevent the flooding from occurring again.
The Brackendowns Police Office and the problems experienced by the station were discussed.
This includes the fire that damaged the reservists office for which Maifala says there is no explanation yet and concerns about a lack of firearm competency training that is affecting some officers at the station.
According to Maifala, the ward is campaigning for a permanent police station in the area.
Issues around 8 Pangola Street (the heritage site in Brackendowns) were discussed following complaints from the community about it being an eyesore, especially with the historical value of the property.
Maifala said the matter has been reported to the Department of Environmental Health.
Other issues discussed were the inspection of the sewage system in the ward and resurfacing of various roads within the area.
