THE Saambou Sentrum building is in the process of being repaired after a devastating fire that swept through the building on July 26.

The fire that caused the building’s roof to collapse was reported to have started in the early hours of the same day, leaving businesses in the building affected.

The cause of the fire, which set the building’s top floor ablaze, has still not been determined.

About 30 firefighters from different Ekurhuleni branches were present to extinguish the fire as it forcefully spread through the top floor of the building.

A few businesses on the ground floor were adversely affected by water and smoke damage coming through the ceiling.

According to William Ntladi, Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) spokesperson, the fire was reported at about 6am. He said no casualties were reported during the time of the fire.

The top building is currently being repaired and rubble removed. More contractors are expected to come on board toward refurbishing the building.

Garth Winter, from Protector Build, a contractor specialising in salvaging and demolition, said the fire resulted to great costs for the businesses at the top of the building.

“Upon our arrival we found destroyed computers, filing cabinets and lots of papers. In the upcoming weeks other contractors will be joining us as they will put up the roof and other parts,” he said.

Graphic Products shares some tips to prevent fires at your office:

• Make sure your area is free of paper clutter, and dispose paper products in central bins.

• Keep heat-producing equipment away from anything susceptible to burning, including copiers, coffee makers, and computers.

• Check your electrical cords

• Avoid candles. They may light up paperwork, files, and the entire office if left unattended.

• Make sure employees know where to go in the event of a fire.

SENZO NGUBANE: “I advise people to take extra caution when cooking. They shouldn’t leave food on the stove unattended. People often want to cook when they are under the influence of alcohol.”
