Dealership comes to the rescue

In aid of Yorkie Rescue South Africa, Raceview Motors presented a branded gazebo for the dog lovers at Raceview on October 4.

The organisation was founded by the Reverend Avril Culverwell in 2010 and to date has saved hundreds of Yorkies. From June 2018 to June 2019 alone they rescued and gave shelter to 500 dogs.

Culverwell takes care of these doggies from her private home and other sanctuaries and plans on growing gradually to accommodate and take in more neglected dogs.

She often gets calls from people wanting to hand over their dogs.

After Culverwell’s Yorkie was stolen from her Alberton home in 2010, she saw a need to take care of neglected, lost and abused furry friends.

She said she was in the streets looking for her dog when she discovered that so many people were also looking for their lost Yorkies too.

“At that time a number of Yorkies had been stolen in the area. I also found lost Yorkies and tried to reunite them with their owners. Sadly, I also found people who no longer wanted their Yorkies for certain reasons,” she said.

The dogs are sheltered in a cage free environment since Culverwell and her team do not believe Yorkies should ever be in cages.

“We do have foster homes but the majority of dogs live with me and my team. We are blessed to have “Yorkie Angels” (Yorkie Rescue SA volunteers) who help us take care of the Yorkies and we can rely upon them,” she said.

Acts of love

Avril mainly relies on donations, If these don’t materialise, she uses her own money to support the dogs,

She teaches these furry friends behavioural skills, she feeds and rehabilitates them and showers them with loads of love.

“Our monthly food bill is about R9 500 and we also have vet bills which need to be paid. We ask for groomers to help out with bathing of dogs.”

She said upon the arrival of the dogs, they make sure that the dogs are well taken care of.

“Every dog that comes to us is sterilised and vaccinated. We clean their teeth and get their teeth chipped – all this to make sure that the dogs are appealing.

“People call me if their dogs are either sick, or if they need help with their dogs,” she said.

She extended her thanks to Raceview Motors for the donation.

“We are very grateful to the owners, dealer principal and the marketing manager Elmari Potgieter. We thank them for being so giving and having our Gazebo designed and made for Yorkie Rescue South Africa.

“Our Gazebo got destroyed by the wind at our last event. Gazebos are costly items since we rely on donations and sponsorship to keep the organisation going,” she said.
