FINALLY after eight months, the M2 Motorway re-opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on October 31 and it will subsequently be open to the public on November 4.

During the ribbon-cutting, the executive mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Herman Mashaba, was joined by, among others, Gauteng Premier David Makhula, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi MP President Emeritus of the Inkatha Freedom Party, MMC for Transport councillor Nonhlanhla Makhuba, Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA) board chairperson Sipho Tshabalala and the JRA acting managing director, Siyabonga Nodu.

JRA closed the M2 Motorway between Crown Interchange and Maritzburg Street on February 28 for rehabilitation.

The closure was necessitated by the continuous monitoring and the bridge visual conditions assessment which indicated that the structural integrity of the concrete element was severely reduced.

Parts of the support structure have moved and that affected the structural stability of the bridge.

Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi MP President Emeritus of the Inkatha Freedom Party, Gauteng Premier David Makhura, executive mayor of the City of Johannesburg Herman Mashaba and MMC for Transport councillor Nonhlanhla Makhuba.

The safety of the Selby and Karsene bridges couldn’t be guaranteed for continuous use by motorists and thus the decision for a full closure of the M2 at those particular points.

Nodu said: “This re-opening will be a relief to road users as many had to endure heavy traffic volumes daily.

“The safety of motorists and all road users will remain our priority, hence the major rehabilitation work on the M2 Motorway.”

Sending his message of support, Buthelezi said: “As someone who spends an enormous part of my time on our roads, I share the sense of relief and celebration that accompany this ceremony. This is a fitting way to mark the last day of Transport Month.”

The key highlight of this R155-million project is the number of jobs created and skills transferred.

Dignitaries at the opening of the M2 Motorway, among others, are Gauteng Premier David Makhura, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi MP President Emeritus of the Inkatha Freedom Party, executive mayor of the City of Johannesburg Herman Mashaba and Chief of JMPD David Tembe.

There have been 57 local community members employed and seven SMME contractors appointed on this project.

JRA would like to thank all motorists and road users who were inconvenienced by the closure for their patience during the rehabilitation period.
