Nurses now have their own tearoom
“The In-Patient Unit has never had the luxury of a private space for the nurses to rest and to recharge during their long 12-hour shifts,” said Tersia.
On November 1, pastor Alan Sutton did the handover on behalf of the Doxa Deo Church in Meyersdal.
“We as Doxa Deo Meyersdal Church deeply appreciate the wonderful and difficult work that you do in our community and,to this end, we have decided to make this donation as part of our Women’s Ministry’s Caring for the Caregiver programme,” said Sutton, the campus pastor at Doxa Deo Meyersdal, at the ceremony at Stepping Stone Hospice in New Market Park.
“The Stepping Stone Hospice In-Patient Unit has never had the luxury of a private space for the nurses to have their lunch, a place to rest and to recharge during their long 12-hour shifts,” said Tersia.
“Their work is emotionally and physically draining and we never gave up hope to one day be able to create a safe space for them where they can detach from the patients and their families. This is vital in ensuring that we continue the high quality palliative care that our patients deserve.”
Tersia said that they cannot express in words what this donation meant to them.
“This church, and especially their Cherish Women’s Group, has for the past two years cared for our staff in such a loving and committed way.
“Every month, like clockwork, Leana van Wyk and her team paid us a visit and handed over special gifts and treats to our nurses. It really means the world to us,” Tersia said.
The wooden cabin, 3m x 6m, has also been fully furnished with tables, chairs, sofas, a brand-new fridge, microwave and cutlery and crockery. To celebrate the opening, staff were invited to a lunch served by members of the congregation after the ribbon was cut and prayers of gratitude were said.
