Ward 94 steering committee opposed to low-cost housing project

The development has been delayed due to expired reports and the steering committee is planning to apply for a court interdict.

On November 19 the Ward 94 councillor, Marina van Wyk, and the steering committee met with residents of the ward to give feedback on the proposed low-cost housing development in the ward close to Mayberry Park.

The chairperson of the steering committee, Dumisani Malinga, thanked the residents for their support regarding the opposition of the proposed development.

He stated that a substantial amount of donations have been received to aid in paying lawyer fees to assist in the looming legal battle regarding the proposed development.

According to the committee, they have drafted an affidavit and are in the process of getting legal advice on getting a court interdict against the proposed development.

They again reiterated that it is not the committee’s nor the residents’ position that they are against housing the poor, but rather that they are against the municipality not following its own guidelines.

The committee added that should they exhaust all other avenues they are considering a rates boycott to force conversation between the residents and the relevant parties.

In her feedback to the residents, van Wyk stated that the proposed development has been delayed due to the feasibility and environmental reports having expired.

These reports have a lifespan of three years.

The council and mayor have given the go-ahead for the reports to be redone.

Van Wyk has appealed to residents to stay vigilant and look for notices placed on the property.

Should a resident see a notice they can contact the steering committee to lodge an objection should they want to.
