Mega City construction to continue

The company hopes to erect 300 RDP houses by the end of the year.

Construction on the Daggafontein Mega City Project is set to resume in February.

Construction took place throughout last year until the end of October when wages were not paid and contractors refused to work until they were given their pay.

According to ward councillor Shadow Shabangu, internal issues within the construction company were the root cause of contractors not being paid in November and December.

However, the issue has been resolved with construction set to begin on February 1 where workers will be paid upfront.

The Mega City Project was launched in 2017 and is aimed at employing mostly local workers, 7 500 temporary jobs will be created and 3 500 permanent jobs after construction is complete.

This year, construction will mostly consist of bulk infrastructure and laying down water pipes, electrical cables and other underground work.

In addition, the company hopes to erect 300 RDP houses by the end of the year.

The Mega City’s infrastructure will consist of largely RDP houses along with low-cost housing, apartment blocks and a shopping centre.

Many residents in the area are worried that the Mega City will cause massive traffic jams.

Shabangu says that the City has listened to the residents and that Clydesdale road will be widened to cope with the extra pressure.

The project will have three exits, two that exit onto Clydesdale and one that joins the N17 highway which will also lessen traffic issues.

The Mega City Project is set to be finished within the next seven years.
