WATCH: Polluted Natalspruit stream affects businesses in the area

Businesses at Gateway Business Park have for years had to bear a terrible smell caused by a polluted Natalspruit stream at the back of their businesses.

Businesses at Gateway Business Park have for years had to bear a terrible smell caused by a polluted Natalspruit stream at the back of their businesses.

The New Redruth companies reported that the smell is caused by sewage which flows along the stream, leaving an awful smell.

Not only does the stream have an unpleasant smell, but it is also polluted with plastics and bottles.

The smell is said to be worse during hot weather conditions.

Antoinette du Toit, of Gateway Test Station, told the RECORD that the City never provides a permanent solution.

“We call the City of Ekurhuleni and they inspect a sewer which may be the result to this problem, but their solutions only last for a day.

“Our customers often ask us how we cope with this unbearable smell,” she said.

Dewald Behle, of Tyres and More, said: “I’ve even had to phone the police once to have them check if there wasn’t a body in the stream.

“We have also had to close the reception area because of the smell.”

The RECORD has contacted the City more than once regarding this matter and no response has been provided.

An update will be published once a response has been given by the City.
