25 Things to do on Valentine’s Day
Time spent together is one of the ultimate Valentine’s Day gifts, whether you and your partner have been together for a little while, or for years. Why not consider one of the ideas below for an extra special and romantic day?

1. Head to the great outdoors
There are plenty of parks in and around Johannesburg to choose from for a romantic walk, and a picnic. There are also plenty of hiking routes around. Destinations worth visiting include Emmarentia Dam and Botanical Gardens, which also boasts a beautiful rose garden. The Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens has a stunning waterfall to name but one of its breathtaking features. In the South of Johannesburg, there is the beautiful Rietvlei Zoo Farm as well as the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve. These are just a few beautiful destinations to choose from, and a quick search on Google will present you with a whole bunch of other options.

2. Set up a waffle bar
Or even a flapjack bar! Have a delicious late morning breakfast with an array of your favourites. All you need is some batter, a waffle maker, or a pan and your favourite toppings. Add some champagne and juice to celebrate a little bit more.

3. Go ballroom dancing
Try your hand (and feet) at ballroom dancing for the ultimate romantic night out, followed by a romantic meal. If you are new, there are plenty of classes around you can sign up for, also a great and fun way to get to know your partner better.

4. Have a Parisian date night
Make sweet or savoury crepes, open up a bottle of wine, put on some romantic music, find the perfect setting and pretend you’re in the City of Love.

5. Tour your own city
Why not hop on a tour bus, or visit a museum or an art gallery you have never seen? Grab your camera and take lots of snaps during the day.

6. Make a scrapbook of your memories together
Gather up photographs, ticket stubs, meaningful receipts and whatever else you can think of and get crafting. You’ll end up with a beautiful book that you can both treasure and flip through every now and again. Remember, memories are forever!

7. Head to a yoga class
Yoga is well-known to be good for the body, mind and spirit, but it is good for the relationship too! Stretch your limbs and find your inner peace while enjoying time together. Look out for couple’s sessions, which is even more fun.

8. Take a pottery lesson
Make something creative in the company of one another. Get your hands stuck in the clay and make something memorable to remind you of a romantic day spent together.

9. Bake something delicious
How about ordering in and preparing a delightful dessert together? Baking is a wonderful way to spend time together while having a blast in the kitchen.

10. Take a road trip
Pick a destination, a great one is the Magaliesberg or Hartebeespoort Dam, and visit some lovely restaurants, craft markets and shops. Or just jump in the car with no destination planned, armed with a sense of adventure and some snacks.

11. Breakfast in bed
How about a luxurious lie in and then whipping up a yummy breakfast or brunch spread? Enjoy it while lounging in your bed. What a refreshing change from the usual rush of workday mornings.

12. Enjoy a wine and chocolate tasting
Wine and chocolate are both delicious on their own, but some things are simply better together. Just like you and your partner. There are plenty of places around, and a few minutes on Google will sure point you in the right direction!

13. Craft something together
How about making some more memories that can last a lifetime? Take a painting class, which is often offered with a glass of wine on the side, or make something at home.

19. Have a romantic movie marathon
Pop the popcorn, grab some other snacks and settle in on the couch for an evening filled with romantic comedies. Or even make a big bed in front of the television, or go as far as creating a fort.

20. Exchange heartfelt gifts
It’s always nice to receive a little token of affection on Valentine’s Day. You don’t need to go all out to make it special; you can even make something by hand. Or consider purchasing something your loved one has always wanted.

21. Write love letters to each other
What a great time to put in writing why your partner is special to you. Tell them how they make you feel, why you fell in love with them and which of their qualities you most admire. You could even turn it into a poem.

22. Give each other a massage
Get hold of a bottle of special massage oil, light some candles to set the mood, switch on some soft background music and give your significant other at least 30 minutes of massage therapy. They can thank you by returning the favour.

23. Send your loved one on a treasure hunt
Send your loved one on a treasure hunt dotted with trails of rose petals and handwritten clues to find their Valentine’s Day gift.

24. Take a romantic bath together
Set the mood by surrounding the tub with candles and sprinkle rose petals in the water. Set a tray of chocolate-covered strawberries and a bottle of champagne within arm’s reach and relax together under the bubbles.

25. Take your partner to a secret destination
Surprise your partner by taking them to a secret and romantic destination for the day or the weekend. Book a special table or a romantic hotel room, or even go camping if that’s their thing!
