Knowledge is key with baby and me

Pregnant ladies enjoyed an afternoon of discussion and information on Pregnancy Awareness Day.

Pregnancy Awareness Day was celebrated at the Clinton Hospital on February 13 with mommies-to-be becoming informed and educated on most of what there is to know about pregnancy.

Pregnant ladies shared their experiences and discomforts while they listened attentively to Candice Lawrence from Alta Kloppers and Associate Dieticians. She had a presentation on vitamins and minerals which included Iron, Folic Acid, Calcium and Omega 3’s found in many common foods. Many harmful bacteria’s are found in meats, cheese and paté.

Another serious topic was smoking and alcohol. Alta advised her audience to stop drinking or smoking while pregnant, as both habits have serious consequences for baby.

Caffeine and sweeteners are allowed, although like everything else it should be taken in moderation: two to three liquids are advised.

Alta also gave valuable information on how to suppress the feeling of nausea and vomiting. This can be manageable if smaller amount of food (room temperature) are eaten more often throughout the day. Dry salty snacks help for discomfort.

Spicy, heavy and fatty foods also cause major discomfort and heartburn in mommies-to-be. Another aspect which assists the feeling of heartburn is fresh air to allow harsh smells to escape.

Whole grain foods, a lot of liquid and high fibre products help for constipation. Alta concluded by saying that “breast is best” and this can only be done if a healthy diet is followed.

The day ended with discussions between the ladies: advice, questions and answers. One of the sisters at the hospital explained the process of giving birth and how baby needs physical skin-on-skin contact with mom and dad to settle after a strenuous ordeal.
