Thinking outside the book at St Benedict’s School

It’s happening at St Benedict’s School, March 14 from 10am to 1pm.

Here’s the inside story on getting your children to love reading: it doesn’t start with reading. It starts with turning books into something more than words between two covers.

With making books the basis of more activities than just reading, and using them to inspire creativity, games and imagination.

When books become more fun, reading becomes more fun. And there’s nothing children love more than fun.

Think outside the book

Take your book on an outing. Reading to the goats at Rietvlei Zoo Farm is more fun that reading on the couch, and it makes more memories too.

Dress for the occasion. As far as reading goes, it doesn’t get much better than them taking on the storybook world dressed like their favourite storybook character.

Get crafty. What’s a book without a bookmark? Cut your bookmark out of cardboard, but leave it blank to start with.

Your child can decorate it bit by bit as they make their way through the book.

Hide out. Forts made out of couches, tents made out of sheets, secret hideaways in boxes; these are some of the best places for adventure, and some of the best places for reading.

Write for them. Children have a natural and spontaneous creativity that’s so easy to transform into illustrated books of their own.

It’s this thinking that inspired a group of passionate children’s authors to create a fun-filled book fair where children can lose themselves in the magic of books.

At the Bennie’s Book Fayre children can browse and buy books, enter a dress-up competition, enjoy workshops, listen to readings, meet children who have published books, and ask authors all the things they’ve ever wanted to know about writing and books.

It’s happening at St Benedict’s School, March 14 from 10am to 1pm. Tickets are R10 per child, R30 per adult, or R50 per family of four. For more information contact info@srrssa.co.za

Tickets available at www.stbenedicts.co.za on the EVENTS page.
