AMCARE manager nominated for Greatness Award
Nominated for a Skutu Mogafe Greatness Award in the Community Development category, Percy Howroyd.
Percy Howroyd, administrator at the AMCARE Centre of Faith, Hope and Love in Newmarket Park, has been nominated for a Skutu Mogafe Greatness Award in the Community Development category.
These awards (SMGA) are the brainchild of the Skutu Mogafe Foundation, which was founded in 2009 and aims to recognise excellence in the endeavours of men and women from around the City of Ekurhuleni.
For Mr Howroyd to win his category, the public is asked to vote for him by SMS’ing the letter “L” to 34693. Please note the cost per SMS is R1.50.
One of the biggest factors considered for the nomination and/or subsequent awarding of the Award is the extent of social upliftment each nominee contributes to the citizens of Ekurhuleni.
AMCARE, a multi-purpose health and social development organisation servicing poor and vulnerable persons in the Greater Alberton area, was established in 2001. Today, operating independently but in association with the Methodist Church of Southern Africa, AMCARE achieves the seemingly impossible, with activities extending from Alberton to Thokoza, Eden Park, Phola Park and the squatter camps of Greenfields and Thinazonke.
AMCARE’s services range from sheltering victims of domestic abuse, to caring and the support of Orphaned and Vulnerable children to rendering psycho-social support to elderly residents. Supplementing these services, they also offer training and skills development to empower the people they serve.
Mr Howroyd joined AMCARE in 2003. “It is just amazing how we’ve grown over the years,” he says. We started off feeding 50 clients per month; today it is well over 3 000 families. Our services have expanded more than 100-fold and we are now at a point where we are literally running out of space,” he says.
To be honoured and recognised in this way is very special. “But the honour and recognition goes to AMCARE,” Mr Howroyd says. “It’s not about me, it’s about AMCARE.”
Voting lines opened on February 17 and close on the morning of April 11. Visit www.skutumogafefoundation.co.za for more information.
