St Francis Anglican Church’s Potjie Competition

St Francis Anglican Church in Meyersdal had their annual Potjie Competition on May 31.

ALBERTON – They had a global theme this year. This theme was chosen as it emphasise the Parish’s diversity. The competition allows the congregation an opportunity to socialise and get to know one another better.

‘This cannot be achieved better than around a relaxed meal together. It also embodies the diversity we have in our congregation and builds trust and friendship among God’s people,” said Father Reggie.

Nine pots were entered with tastes from Mexico, Morocco, Turkey India, Spain, Italy, India, South Africa (African) and South Africa (Boere).

Amina Tyrer, a catering consultant, Father Reggie Venter, the rector of St Francis, and Keith Holliman, the church warden, had the difficult task of judging the potjies.

Charmaine and Ossie Carstens won the competition with their Mexican inspired pot. This is the second year they won.

The inspiration for the winning pot came after Charmaine sent Ossie and her son Marvin on a Mexican cooking class for Ossie’s birthday. Ossie and Charmaine try to create a special experience when they have their children around on weekends.

Charmaine is usually the cook in the house, but when Ossie gets the opportunity he jumps in. Ossie enjoys a mix of flavours, and when a special effort is needed in preparing a dish. He sees it as a rewarding experience.
