Chevron and survivors of the Mercedes Benz accident comment.
SOUTH CREST – A company was appointed to remove the roof and truck at the Coy’s service station, corner of Voortrekker and Paul Kruger Street on July 1. The area was walled to prevent any member of the public to enter, especially if they had no PPE (Personal productive equipment).
After the accident on June 27 with the truck that drove directly into the wall of the shop, bumped a car over and missed two petrol pumps, the survivors of the Mercedes Benz vehicle and Chevron Communications Manager had the following comments.
Theresa Nightingale, a survivor, explained on July 2 that she had been experiencing muscle pains from the accident. Her son is experiencing similar problems with sore muscles and neck pains.
Chevron’s communications, Suzanne Pullinger explains: “Chevron South Africa has confirmed the incident, which took place at Coy’s Service Station in Alberton on the morning of Friday, June 27, involving a truck which collided with the service station building.
“Even though the building structure was badly damaged, there was no fire concern as none of the petrol pumps were damaged and no fuel spills had occurred.
“A Chevron emergency response team had been working with the relevant authorities and the company which owns the truck to ensure the security and safety of the premises and surrounding area.
“On Tuesday, July 1, additional specialised contractors and emergency management services proceeded to remove the truck from where it was lodged in the service station building.
“The process only commenced once all risks were assessed and mitigated and the area cordoned off to ensure the safety of the personnel on the site and the public at large.
“Chevron’s personnel remained at the site to ensure the operation was completed successfully. The service station will be closed to the public until all construction at the site has been completed.”
