A brand new R.P. Maphanzela Primary School

"We learnt that the library had been closed for a long time, and we thought it was about time we put it to good use."

THOKOZA – learners from R.P. Maphanzela Primary School benefited on Mandela Day, when the school unveiled a refurbished library to improve the level of teaching and learning, while also enhancing the culture and discipline of reading among young learners.

Emperors Palace staff and management, through its community development trust, the Peermont Children’s Trust (PCT), honoured the day by rolling up their sleeves to change the conditions of the school by refurbishing the school library, which will include installing a new ceiling, book shelves, tiling, lights and painting.

The school also received two new computers to enable the librarian to capture the data and the filing of the books.

As part of encouraging greening in our township schools, the popular East Rand resort helped plant seedlings in existing vegetable gardens; promoting food security at our schools.

Five thousand books were donated by the Rotary Association in Isando, Ekurhuleni, and the Peermont Children Trust head office donated books worth R10 000.

R.P. Maphanzela Primary School in Thokoza experienced the ‘Madiba Magic’, when the world celebrated Mandela Day on Friday July 18.

The school library is of historical importance, because the building was damaged during the political turmoil in the buildup to the country’s democracy.

Parents and community members came in their numbers to show their appreciation to all the organisations which worked together to make the school look and be better than it was, creating an environment that will make learners enjoy learning.

Peermont Children Trust Chairperson Tshidi Madima said: “We are happy to see all this, because we have been supporting the school for some time now. This is part of an ongoing process, because we provide school uniforms and offer a feeding scheme to the schools we support.

“We learnt that the library had been closed for a long time, and we thought it was about time we put it to good use.”
