Speedster clocks 202km/h – ‘chasing mother nature’
The 21-year-old speedster told EMPD that he needed to go to the bathroom and this was the reason that he was travelling at a speed of 202km/h. He was allowed to use the bathroom at the Brackendowns SAPS.

ALBERTON – A 21-year-old driver of a powerful red BMW M3 was arrested on the R59 freeway in the Alberton area on Sunday August 24, when he drove at a speed of up to 202km/h and failed to stop on the instruction of a police officer. EMPD managed to corner the driver in the Mid-Vaal jurisdiction. He was caught at 6:38.
“For travelling at that breakneck speed, the M3 driver advanced the reason that he was rushing to attend to the calls of nature,|” EMPD Spokesperson Wilfred Kgasago said. “Ekurhuleni bike squad had to hit speeds of between 280 and 290km/h to apprehend the speedster,” Kgasago explained.
Kgasago added that the young lad was kindly afforded the opportunity to relieve himself at the Brackendowns police station where he was detained.
This special speed operation on R59 freeway, which started at 6:00 and lasted for four hours, was conducted between Heidleburg and Kliprivier turnoffs.
Additionally, between 7:00 and 8:30, three more speedsters were nabbed. A 31-year-old driver on a Honda super-bike registered 198km/h and claimed that he was dashing to a family meeting, while a VW Polo driver caught at 175km/h, stated that his 10-year-old daughter’s crying prompted him to press hard on the pedal in order to get home quicker. The fourth culprit was arrested when he was caught doing 182km/h in a BMW sedan, claiming that he was late for an appointment.
All the arrestees were booked at Brackendowns police station on charges of reckless and negligent driving, and were granted bail of between R500 and R1 000. The BMW M3 driver was refused bail and appeared in Palm Ridge Magistrate’s court on Monday. His case was postponed for further investigation.
