Verwoerdpark residents fed up with ‘over-flowing’ bins
Residents of Alberton are complaining about refuse removal that does not take place at scheduled times.
ALBERTON – A resident of Verwoerd Park, Lori Weiss, said that refuse removal does not take place on the times indicated by Ekurhuleni Metro Municipality; according to the schedule for the area they reside in refuse should be removed on Fridays.
“We might have had refuse removed once on a Friday,” she complains.
According to the resident the dustbins of the complex where she lives, Caranita, is set out on Fridays, as the schedule requires. Then the dustbins stand outside the entire week and the refuse would only be removed on the following Sunday.
What also concerns Lori is that this attracts people who scavenge through the dustbins, leaving the litter lying around the dustbin area. She also believes that this attracts rats and that it is hazardous to the health of the residents of the area.
Cyril van Zyl, a resident of Brackendowns, has also noted that the bins are not emptied on the scheduled days. On August 27 he made contact with the RECORD and said that the refuse removal was already two days late at that stage.
When Ekurhuleni Metro Municipality was asked for comment, they said that they are aware of the service delivery interruption related to the collection of waste in Alberton.
“The municipality is attending to it as a matter of priority. The interruption is due to poor availability of vehicles caused by breakdowns, accidents and routine services and maintenance. The residents are being assured that by Sunday, August 31, the backlog would be cleared in all areas,” an EMM Spokesperson explained.
Residents are still requested to push out their dustbins on the scheduled day, and to leave them outside until they are serviced.
EMM assures residents that the backlog of refuse removal will be cleared by August 31. When Ekurhuleni Metro Municipality was asked for comment, they said that they are aware of the service delivery interruption related to the collection of waste in Alberton.
