A MAN (24) was arrested on Monday, April 4 for kidnapping after snatching a four-year-old girl.
According to the Alberton police, he claimed that she was his child and that he had never met her before. He took the girl without her grandmother’s consent. The biological mother of the child died in 2012 and the child was staying with her grandmother.
The incident took place at Phumula in Extension 22 in Thatseng Street. It is alleged the man came during the day and told the grandparent that he was the father of the child and that he was there to discuss the matter with her. He then left. Later that evening the grandmother left the yard and that is when it is alleged by other children in the yard that the man came back and took the child.
The three children followed him until he boarded a taxi and then they ran back home to inform their mother.
Sgt Phumza Mgedezi was informed and together with the crime office members they began the investigation and the search after opening a docket of kidnapping. The lead went cold at midnight but in the morning the search was resumed, with other members joining in. Dedication and perseverance paid off as a suspect was arrested at his residence at Sunrise Vosloorus, where the child was found.
The suspect will appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court to answer to the alleged charges against him.
