Driver arrested for assault and speeding

Five drivers ended up behind bars when they were arrested for excessive speeding between 6:00 and 8:00 on Monday, April 11, on Zuurfontein Road, Esther Park.

ON Saturday, April 9, a 35-year-old male driver was stopped after being clocked at 111km/h in an 80km/h zone on Old Heidelberg Road, near Rondebult, in his blue VW Citi Golf.

The driver resisted arrest and in the process sunk his teeth into an arresting officer’s right arm, which necessitated medical attention at the Netcare Union hospital.

The driver was locked up at Alberton Police Station where he was charged with excessive speeding, assault and resisting arrest. He was expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrates Court on Monday, April 11.

Also on Saturday, on the N3 southbound, just after the Rand Airport turn-off, which is a 120km/h zone, a 31-year-old male driver in a Hyundai H1 was arrested when he was caught doing 178km/h and provided no reason for the offence. He was charged at Germiston Police Station with reckless and negligent driving and released after posting bail of R1000. He was expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrates Court on Monday, April 11.

The EMPD High Speed Enforcement Unit conducted the special operation following complaints of reckless and negligent driving on this stretch of Zuurfontein Road.

Besides the five offenders arrested, 11 drivers took home fines for slightly exceeding the speed limit of 80km/h.

The driver who took the top spot was clocked at 135km/h, driving a VW Caddy. He is a 44-year-old who mentioned that he was rushing to deliver medical samples to a hospital. He was arrested at 07:15. At 06:50, a 34-year-old old male driver in a Nissan LDV was nabbed doing 126km/h, claiming that he was on his way to hospital.

The other drivers who were arrested were caught doing speeds of 122, 119 and 114 km/h.

The five drivers were booked for reckless and negligent driving, at Sebenza Police Station and later released after posting bail of R1000 each. They were expected to appear in the Edenvale Magistrates Court on Monday, April 11.
