Crime victim has her say

Arriving home after going out for coffee, Wendy Roos and her ex-daughter-in-law, Andi Bekker, were attacked by three men.

WENDY Roos and her ex-daughter-in-law, Andi Bekker were attacked by three men after they arrived home on March 5.

Two suspects pulled open Roos’ door on the passenger side of the vehicle while one suspect pointed a gun at Bekker on the driver’s side.

Roos said they immediately started beating her. “They came straight for me and started hitting me with guns, hit me in the mouth with a brick and bit me repeatedly.”

She was taken to the Netcare Clinton Hospital following the assault and has had to go on anti-retroviral treatment, which she says makes her very ill. She also needed more than 20 stitches in her head.

Roos left the hospital immediately, against medical advice, because she stated that she preferred to be at home. She also told the RECORD about the overwhelming support that she has received from the community, including people from overseas.

“All I wanted to do was survive. Now I’m too scared to close my eyes because I can see it happening again. I never want this to happen to another person,” she said.

“The whole thing is very suspicious. They wanted to kill me. None of my ex-daughter-in-law’s valuables were taken, and they didn’t touch her. They tried to drag me to their car, but I resisted, and fortunately they left after witnesses started taking note of what was happening,” said the shaken Roos. “The police have done nothing about this. They haven’t contacted me, nor the witness who got their licence plate number and other details.”

The communications officer for the Alberton SAPS, Sgt. Nkuna, says they went by Roos’ house twice, but were told she was not available. “Documents were left for her to take to the doctor and then submit to Alberton SAPS’ reception but she left without seeing the investigating officer. The investigating officer has been informing her of the progress of her case telephonically.”

According to Nkuna, the investigating officer is not allowed onto the property when he goes by and that Ms Bekker does not answer his calls. “The investigation is ongoing, the registration of the vehicle was checked on. The victim has been made aware of the outcome of that investigation. If the victim can make herself available to the investigating officer, it would help.”
