ON Tuesday, April 26, an accident occurred which led to the Jaws of Life having to be used on one of the vehicles involved, to free trapped passengers.

The accident happened on the corner of Swartkoppies Road and Hibiscus Street, when, according to onlookers, a truck sped through the intersection when the light had turned red, hitting a car turning into Hibiscus, and speeding past and knocking down one of the concrete poles in the process.

According to Kobeli Mokheseng, media liaison officer for the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department, the accident involved a white truck and a white VW Polo. “A male truck driver in his thirties, didn’t sustain any visible injuries. The 35-year-old male Polo driver was rushed to the Netcare Union Hospital for medical treatment, due to serious injuries he sustained. A male passenger in his twenties, who also sustained serious injuries, was taken to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital for medical treatment.

“It is not clear at this stage what actually caused the accident, but a case of reckless and negligent driving has been registered at Alberton SAPS,” said Kobeli.
