Albertonian takes Hollywood by storm

A young man from Alberton is making waves in Hollywood, and for all the right reasons.

A YOUNG man from Alberton is making waves in Hollywood, and for all the right reasons.

Ricardo (Ricky) Cruz is a 21-year-old who has spent the last few years making Hollywood sit up and take notice of him.

Ricky’s career kicked off with a supporting role in the local film, ‘Spud’, in 2010, which led to the young man developing a great passion for the entertainment industry.

Throughout his matric year at St Benedict’s, Bedfordview, Ricky carried around a video camera and captured some of the moments, already starting to show talent as a film-maker.

After school, Ricky made appearances in other productions, such as one of the National Geographic episodes of a show called ‘Dead or Alive’, and also starred in theater productions such as ‘Footloose’ and ‘Dead Poets Society’.

In 2012, Ricky got the opportunity to study at the New York Film Academy in the United States, and received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting and Film degree in 2016, with cum laude results.

“I have taught hundreds of students, and Ricardo stands out as one of my all-time favourites. He is a talented, hard-working and intelligent individual who possesses a unique and wonderful gift”, said writer, actor and producer, George McGrath, upon Ricky’s graduation.

Upon the completion of his studies, Ricky gained employment as stage manager at the Groundlings Theatre and School, a renowned sketch comedy theatre in Los Angeles that has served as a stepping stone for stars such as Will Ferrell.

Not one to rest on his laurels, Ricky created his own smash-hit comedy production called ‘Made in the ’90s’, in which he directed, produced, wrote and starred and it was lauded as a resounding success, enjoying sold-out shows throughout the season it ran.

Ricky’s recipe for success in Hollywood is simple: “You have to earn it. You have to be prepared to work yourself stupid and dedicate every ounce of energy you have to furthering yourself in your career,” says the young star.

This young man is one to look out for and he is keeping the South African flag flying high in Hollywood.
