MPACT Recycling, through its Ronnie Recycler programme, has been instilling a culture of recycling by educating learners about environmental awareness while enabling schools to raise funds for a number of years now.
With 2016 being no exception, the company recently opened entries to its annual school’s competition which began in February and ends in September.
Nursery, primary and high schools in Johannesburg are all encouraged to participate in order to win their share of R140 000 in prize money.
Mpact Recycling communications manager, Donna Noble, said that all schools registered with the recycling programme and currently recycle with Mpact Recycling are eligible to enter the competition.
“Schools need to collect a minimum of eight tonnes (8 000kgs) during the eight month period to qualify and schools that collect the most tonnes in their area will win,” she said.
Each of the seven regions of operation have a prize allocation of R20 000 and the schools collecting the most amount of paper in their area will receive a prize to the value of R10 000.
Government schools can identify what resource they need most (it could be anything from exercise books, to a photocopier or sports equipment) and this will be donated as the prize. The green ambassador and green student at each winning school will be awarded R1 000 cash each. Schools coming in second will be rewarded cash or resources to the value of R5 000 while those who come in third will receive cash or resources to the value of R3 000.
Mpact Recycling supplies participating schools with a Ronnie paper bank or bags for easy collection and storage of recycled paper. The general community can also support schools in the competition by placing their paper in the igloo-shaped paper banks. Once these are full and ready for regular weekly or bi-weekly collections, the schools must log a request for collection.
The competition is a great initiative which provides an opportunity to teach children about the importance of recycling and the direct benefits which it has on our environment.
In addition, Mpact Recycling has the Ronnie Recycler campaign which sees the popular and friendly recycling mascot visit schools to educate the children on the importance of recycling as well as participating at school fun days and special events. This outreach effort to assist schools in environmental education saw 294 schools visited by Ronnie in 2015 and reached well over 143 000 learners. This programme makes successful inroads to assisting Mpact Recycling reduce waste going into landfills.
