FOUR people were killed and six others critically injured in an accident involving two light motor vehicles, on Thutong Road, linking Vosloorus and Katlehong, in Ekurhuleni.
The accident occurred at around 03:00 on Sunday.
Two of the critically injured patients were still trapped in one of the vehicles (white BMW sedan) involved when rescue teams arrived on scene. Specialised rescue tools (the Jaws of Life) had to be used to access and free the patients.
At least three occupants of the BMW sedan were declared dead on scene, as was one person from the Toyota Conquest hatchback.
All the injured patients were transported to Thelle Mogoerane Regional Hospital, in Vosloorus, by ambulances.
The road was closed to traffic for the duration of the accident, until investigations were concluded on scene by Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipal Police (EMPD) officers.
