Arrest made after massive heist

One suspect was arrested in Alberton after a massive heist of cigarettes took place in Boksburg, recently.

ONE suspect was arrested in Alberton after a massive cigarette heist took place in Boksburg.

At around 08:50 on Friday, August 12, along Du Preez Street, in Reiger Park, a British American Tobacco SA (BAT) Toyota panel van was accosted by suspects in several vehicles and hijacked.

The vehicle was tracked down to the intersection of Clinton and Fore streets in Alberton, where one suspect was arrested and some of the cargo recovered.

The recovery and the arrest were made by the EMPD SWAT team, EMPD Community Liaison Units and the FG Security Services members at 09:30.

Four vehicles with an unknown number of suspects fled the scene and the Metro Police and the FG Security Services members were able to apprehend one suspect.

Some of the loot had already been cross-loaded into an Iveco panel van.

Investigations are underway to locate and apprehend the suspects who are still at large.

The arrested suspect is a 39-year-old Somalian national, who was charged with possession of stolen goods at the Alberton Police Station.

He is expected to appear in the Palmridge Magistrate’s Court today (Monday, August 15).
