Tons of sugar found in garage

There was an estimated 30 tons of sugar in the garage.

The police struck it lucky on Monday, August 22.

They arrived at a house in DAF Street, looking for a stolen Quantum Minibus which was found parked in the backyard.

A 30-year-old man from Abraham Street was arrested on the premises, on suspicion of being involved in the case of the stolen vehicle.

While the police were busy with the stolen Quantum Minibus, they found 1 000 kilogram bags of sugar, 200 litre drums and many 50kg bags, all filled with sugar. There was an estimated 30 tons of sugar in the garage.

The Alberton Police were investigating a hijacking case, in which a truck from Imperial Cargo, carrying a load of sugar, was hijacked in Alberton, last month.

The Imperial investigation team arrived with their bar-code stickers, to check the cargo, and the bar-codes were a match.

Bertus van den Heever, of Santam Insurance, who arrived with trucks and a forklift, to salvage the sugar, said it was amazing that the suspects managed to stack the 1 000 kilogram bags on top of each other.

“How did they offload and stack the heavy bags without a forklift?” he asked.

A 29-year-old man from Valiant Street was also arrested ont the scene.

Police say he said that part of the load was hidden somewhere else.

Police are currently investigating both cases.
