EMPD cracks down on unroadworthy vehicles

Statistics reveal that unroadworthy motor vehicles contribute to the high rate of accidents which we experience on our roads on a daily basis

On Thursday, August 25, between 06:00 and 14:00, in the Thokoza, Eden Park and Greenfield areas, EMPD officers concentrated on unroadworthy motor vehicles.

Three vehicles were impounded, 10 passed the test and 27 had their licences confiscated, forcing their owners to take them for re-testing.

Statistics reveal that unroadworthy motor vehicles contribute to the high rate of accidents which we experience on our roadways on a daily basis.

In the Greenfield area they examined vehicles on the K91, in Thokoza they stopped cars on Khumalo road and, in Eden Park, they operated on Umbrella and Peterson streets.

Motor vehicles with more serious defects were discontinued from the roads, towed and kept at the vehicle pound in Alberton.

Serious offences for which vehicles were impounded included defective brakes, faulty steering mechanisms, smooth tyres, unlicensed and unregistered vehicles as well as exposed electrical wires.

One 10 ton truck, nine light delivery vans, 20 minibuses and 10 light motor vehicles were attended to at the Alrode/Alberton testing station.

The owners of towed vehicles are liable for a towing fee of R1 860 and an additional charge of R241 for storage per day. The impounded vehicles can be re-claimed by the owners at the EMPD Alberton pound on producing of the vehicle registration papers and identity document.
