EMM responds to claims of load shedding

Two Alberton residents claim that lots of load shedding is taking place, in spite of the EMM's claims that this is not the case.

Two Alberton residents claim that lots of load shedding is taking place, in spite of the EMM’s claims that this is not the case.

“As an Alberton resident, I would like to know if residents were notified or informed by any means regarding the maintenance or load shedding power failures that we are experiencing,” asked Vernon Demos.

”It was over the news some time back that there wasn’t any load shedding happening anywhere, but that’s not the case as I have heard that load-shedding is happening all over and nobody is informed.

“Have these issue been addressed to the Ekhuruleni municipality? I called them three times one day and the staff were laughing and making jokes while I was listening and holding on the line for assistance.

”The electricity is sometimes off for more than three hours at a time. The call was logged with Ekhuruleni and I’m hoping that there will be better communication forward regarding load shedding and how frequently it will be happening.

”Load shedding can’t be happening on a Sunday afternoon going into Monday, as we have to prepare for work.”

Another Alberton resident, Petro Barnard, from Randhart, says she is experiencing similar problems, and that the power is often off for around eight hours at a time.

She claims it seems much too structured to be cable theft, blown transformers, or any of the other reasons the EMM usually give for these problems.

“I took note of some of the days and times the power has been off recently, and other people I’ve spoken to confirm this,” she said.

”Randhart and Randhart extensions one and two, as well as General Alberts Park were off on Monday, August 1, from 23:00 – 7:45; Thursday, August 4, from 23:00 – 04:00; Saterday, August 6, from 13:00 – 19:00; Saturday, August 20, from 13:00 – 20:30; Wednesday, August 24, from 08:00 onwards.

”This is getting ridiculous. This is load shedding, simple as that.”

Themba Gadebe, spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, had this to say:

“There is no load shedding taking place within the City of Ekurhuleni or in the country.

”The customers probably experienced a power supply interruption caused by a fault on the electrical network, caused by vandalism or theft.

”The City of Ekurhuleni and its technicians work to the best of their ability to protect the electrical network and to restore electricity supply as quickly as possible to the consumers when these unforeseen problems occur.

”Customers are urged to report any service-related interruptions through the municipal call centre, for a team of technicians to be sent out to resolve the problem and ensure they receive a reference number for follow-up purposes”.
