Be a responsible pet owner

Your pets give you unconditional love 365 days a year.

THE Easter holidays will soon be upon us, and if you are going away, it is important to make your arrangements for your pets now.

Dogs and cats can’t be left at home without care, and it is important to make suitable arrangements in advance, as kennel spaces are booked up quickly. If you wish to board your pet, you must ensure their vaccinations are up to date, as proof will be required by the boarding kennel/cattery in question.

Alberton SPCA has boarding kennels and a cattery you can book your pet into while you are away. It is important to book early. A deposit of 50 per cent and proof of vaccination are required to secure the booking.

If you decide to leave your pets at home, then you must either get a house-sitter to stay in your home and care for your pets or arrange for someone reliable to feed and check on them daily.

It is also very important that you advise your pet-sitter of your local vet and their number in addition to advising them on what to do should your dogs escape your property. You need to tell your pet-sitter that, having checked the local area, they should report the missing dogs to the SPCA immediately. Ensure you give them the SPCA number and address: 011 907 1568, Lincoln Road, General Alberts Park, so they can check to see if your dogs are there.

Too many people don’t bother and the SPCA ends up with numerous strays who could be returned home sooner.
