Little ones are learning to collaborate

Children have fun at school.

“WORKING together as a team is not the same today as it was 20 years ago,” said Elizabeth Steenkamp, principal at Castillian Crèche, in Meyersdal, where young participants are actively encouraged to take on projects in teams.

This is a rapidly growing trend in education and, according to Steenkamp, collaborative success depends on educators moving away from 19th century teaching practices and designing a productive classroom environment to meet the demands of an ever-changing society.

“We embrace new and radical teaching methods that are relevant to everyday experiences.

“This includes collaborative project-based learning which encourages thinking and effective communication skills, and a knowledge of technology,” she said.
