THE alarming rate of burglaries and robberies in Eden Park is causing despair among some residents, since these crimes are now happening at any time of the day.
On Tuesday, May 30 two women were robbed by two unknown men armed with knives. The women were walking from Phola Park Clinic across an open veld towards Eden Park to get a taxi on the K146 Road which runs past Eden Park towards Palmridge.
The robbers approached the women, drew their big knives and demanded cellphones and cash.
One of the women in distress, Fikile Sithlole, said they were very scared because it looked like the two robbers were ready to stab them at any moment. She further said that, as the robbers were taking their cellphones, a passing police vehicle stopped after the officers noticed something was wrong.
The robbers tried to run away but the police chased them and nabbed them with the phones in their possession.
The suspects were arrested and locked up at Eden Park SAPS, where a case of armed robbery was opened.
The footpath between the clinic and Eden Park is notorious for armed robberies. Many residents have been robbed here and a woman resident of Adler Street even had scars inflicted on her face by an armed robber. Residents are urged not to use this shortcut.
