“HOW can people be so brave and stupid to steal used syringes from a clinic and not consider the danger and consequences that result from using used needles and syringes? Just the thought of it gives me the shivers,” said Const Andrew Kordom of Eden Park SAPS Criminal Investigating Department (CID).
A case of burglary at business premises was opened on Monday, June 5 by the head of the clinic, Simon Raselekane, after discovering that a burglary had taken place during the weekend and that items were missing.
Raselekane told the RECORD that on Friday, June 2 at about 2pm, he locked the back building used by staff for the safekeeping of the clinic equipment and waste material awaiting municipal collection. On Monday, he found that a bag containing official papers and waste needles had been stolen.
The burglars made their entry through a window at the back of the building, which faces onto an open undeveloped field where anyone can operate unnoticed by passers-by.
The clinic staff expressed their concern about the person or persons who stole the used needles which, if used, could possibly infect them with various infections, illnesses and even HIV/Aids.
