JUNIOR College Castillian hosted their annual Grade R Science Day on August 25. “We were blown away by the interesting and explosive experiments our Grade R learners presented,” said the principal, Elizabeth Steenkamp.
“Being a pre-school educator for many years, I noticed a decline in interest and willingness to find out how things work and why they work the way they do,” Steenkamp said.”This inspired me to bring back that spark, that eagerness and excitement about finding out how things in our environment work. In 2010 we launched our very first Science Day,” continued Steenkamp.
This was their seventh annual Science Day and their Grade R learners did not disappoint. They had to present their experiment to an adjudicator. Kumari Lewis explained what ingredients were used, how they work and why they work together. Their station had to depict their specific experiment. From magnetism, electricity and volcanoes to the negative effects pollution have on our environment. “It was an amazing morning spent with our young and upcoming scientists. Well done to each of our Grade R learners,” concluded Steenkamp.
