Massive water wastage in Alberton

A lady working at the taxi rank said the water has been leaking for months, since around May.

A GUSHING water pipe has seen countless litres of water being wasted for months. This as Ekurhuleni metro urges residents to save water.

RECORD visited the taxi rank on Kritzinger Avenue to get an idea of the severity of the water wastage and found it worse than expected.

THE SOURCE: The water pooling and running down the paving.

On the same day the issue was reported, the City of Ekurhuleni sent out a press release asking residents and businesses to curb their water use.

“With the spring season upon us, temperatures begin to rise along with the demand for water and water-using activities – like gardening and swimming.

“In this light, the City of Ekurhuleni urges its residents and businesses alike to focus their efforts on implementing simple changes that will go a long way in reducing water demand,” said Themba Gadebe, City of Ekurhuleni spokesperson.

“The City is putting in place interventions such as the reduction of water pressure, prioritising the repair of major pipe bursts as well as leak detection and repair.

“Residents could therefore experience low water pressure, especially during peak demand times between 5am and 8am and 5pm and 8pm,” added Gadebe.

FOREVER FLOWING: Water running out of the tap (on the right).

A lady working at the taxi rank said the water has been leaking for months, since around May. “None of the toilets even work, water is leaking everywhere, along with other problems that need to be addressed,” she added.

RECORD noticed where the fresh water was coming up and how the water is collected for the washing of taxis.

NON-STOP: The urinal at the taxi rank’s toilet flowing constantly.

The urinal in the toilet was running non-stop, along with a tap that was fully open and running.

The City was contacted for comment, but the RECORD had not received anything at the time of publishing.

WHAT A WASTE: Water from the leak runs down the pavement while two taxis are washed with the water.
