THE cultural diversity celebrated this national day which, up to now, had shown and expressed how the nation is proud of what it is.
On Heritage Day, September 24, residents of Greenfield celebrated the day at the Community Hall where young and old came dressed in their African-inspired regalia representing different cultures like Zulu, Xhosa, Venda, Sotho and Pedi.
The event was organised by a community forum named “Ubugebengu Habona Mvuso” under the leadership of its chairperson, Ernest Mmolotsi and the secretary Mary-Magdelina Mhlauli. “This event, which will be celebrated annually, is to teach our children their roots and to know where we come from,” said Ernest. “We want them to know their culture.”
“Our community forum is mainly to teach and protect the children from crime and drugs. Although only established this year, and facing a lot of opposition within the community, we will strive on teaching children about Ubunto and culture of their ancestors,” Ernest added.
The Heritage Day celebration started at 12noon and continued to 5pm. The Community Hall was packed to capacity. The audience was entertained with songs and dances of different cultures. Dancers were as young as four, all the way up to 60.
