EMPD confiscates R1-m worth of alcohol

Several boxes of expensive brands of cognac and dry gin were confiscated.

THE Ekurhuleni metropolitan police have arrested several suspects after a truck transporting alcohol was hijacked.

On Friday morning, October 6, the EMPD Intervention Unit (Swat) responded to a reported hijacking at a storage facility at the intersection of Chris and Christina streets in Alberton North.

EXPENSIVE BOOZE: The boxes of expensive alcohol that were recovered.

Approximately 15 minutes after the report was made, EMPD arrived on the scene and found six men unloading boxes of liquor from the trailers hooked onto the hijacked truck.

“Preliminary investigations while on the scene revealed that the liquor was stolen and that the case was registered at Kempton Park. The hijacked truck had a Kliprivier SAPS case number,” said Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago, EMPD spokesperson.

“Several boxes of expensive brands of cognac and dry gin were confiscated and the six suspects were detained at Alberton SAPS on charges of possession of a hijacked vehicle and stolen goods. The recovered truck was taken to SAPS Van Ryn Deep Pound for safe keeping and the recovered liquor, estimated to cost around R1-million, was handed over to Alberton Police Station,” added Kgasago.

The detained suspects, aged between 21 and 62, were expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court on Monday, October 9.
