Alberton’s own powerhouse best in South Africa

We hope he continues to be an inspiration and continues to win big.

A BODYBUILDER from Alberton has yet again proved he is one of the best in the business.

Carlos Nunes (44) represented South Africa at the International Federation of Body Building (IFBB) recently, where he placed fourth in the Masters 40-44 years and up to 90kg category.

The IFBB World Championships took part in Bistrita, Romania from November 10-13 with over 170 countries and close to 800 athletes taking part in the championships, all of whom were the best of the best.

BODY PERFECT: Carlos Nunes in his Protea tracksuit with his many bodybuilding awards.

“In my category there were athletes from Poland, Ukraine, Estonia, Slovakia, Portugal, Syria, Romania, Bahrain, Brazil, Turkey and France.

“It was an extremely difficult line-up as all these men brought their best to stage. I have worked all my life to be able to finish in the finals and make the top six at the world championships. I am very proud to have placed fourth in the world against these elite athletes,” said Nunes.

Nunes started bodybuilding to help his rugby at school as he was much smaller than all the other players. He wanted to gain some size and strength, but enjoyed it so much that he left rugby and focused on bodybuilding.

“I started developing quite quickly and when I saw the results, I thought this is right for me and I was hooked. I’ve been doing it ever since,” he said.

No slowing down

Nunes is an accomplished athlete who has won eight South African titles and has taken part in three world championships during his illustrious career and there are no signs of slowing down any time soon. In fact, Nunes says he is probably in the best shape of his life.

This world-class athlete trains every single day, especially during competition. He wakes up at 4am on weekdays to do his cardio, which is followed by breakfast. Then he goes off to work. Upon his return he eats again, goes to the gym and then back home he eats again and is in bed before 11pm.

WINNER: Carlos Nunes with his impressive fourth-place trophy after the IFBB World Championships.

“This sport takes up a lot of your time and energy – you have to be extremely dedicated and disciplined to be able to make it anywhere.

“The other thing is that despite what people think, this isn’t really a lone, selfish sport as many believe. I am blessed to have my wife, Bronwen, helping and supporting me, cooking my meals etc,” said Nunes.

Nunes is flying the Alberton, the South and South Africa’s flags high with his amazing physical prowess and dedication to the sport of bodybuilding. We hope he continues to be an inspiration and continues to win big.
