MELONIQUE Klassen’s boyfriend appeared in Palmridge Court on April 25 on charges of murder. He shot her seven times on March 23 and handed himself over to the police on March 26.
Members of the Eden Park community came in droves to support Melonique’s family.
The people present at the crime a month ago, are seeking justice for the atrocity that was committed to one of their own. Dressed in all black, they showed their disdain for the violence that is committed against women and the youth.
This act of violence against Melonique that shocked the Eden Park community has been seen by many as the final straw in the series of violent events that have affected the people – especially the youth.
“It is unacceptable,” said Diana Ruiters who was speaking on behalf of the people present. “These cases never get finished at court and leave us without justice being served.”
Reports from the area indicate that the largest number of deaths experienced lately in Eden Park have been people under the age of 35. A lot of these deaths are attributed to violent crime. “How long will it be until this violence reaches our children?” asked Diana.
Last week the RECORD reported on Shane Simmons who was beaten to death. In February the Record reported about a young man, Hemis Pasley, who was shot seven times and left to die. This week the RECORD is reporting on the same young man, who actually survived the first attempt on his life, was released from hospital two weeks ago, just to be shot and killed.

The ongoing violence in Eden Park is of an extreme nature. Shootings and stabbings are commonplace. “It is unfair to us who want to live normal lives,” Diana said. “The drug dealers in the area are at the core of our problem.”
The community members present have asked for more to be done to ensure the safety of residents. They have asked people in the area to report crimes that happen to ensure that police are aware of the concerns of the people.
The case has been postponed till July 31. No bail was determined and the accused remains in custody.
