JANALD Scholtemeyer, an ex-attorney who operated from Limpopo, pled guilty of fraud on August 24 this year at the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court. He will be sentenced on December 11.
The sentencing of Scholtemeyer, which was set for October 25, has been remanded until December 11.
On August 24, he pleaded guilty on two counts – practising as an attorney after being struck from the roll on June 12, 2013, by the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria, as well as issuing a false divorce decree.
The RECORD met with an Alberton resident* who suffered a great loss of property not only through the actions of Janald’s fraud, when he issued a false decree of divorce on behalf of the plaintiff in the divorce matter, but said he was also astonished by the extent of the looting of his estate during the process of his divorce battle by people that he had previously trusted, and that it almost became a free for all.
He further stated: “Scholtemeyer is only the first conviction, but most certainly not the last. One further arrest has been made by the Brackendowns police (this has been confirmed – case number CAS 193/09/2018) and further arrests are expected soon. People should be encouraged to see that the criminals don’t always get away with their crimes.”
The resident concluded: “I hope the sentencing of Scholtemeyer would sound out a warning to other criminals that they best refrain from crime. Thank you to all the people who supported me during this very difficult matter, which has been going on for many years.”
